Record “dark money” spending keeps donors hidden
Why this matters now
When large political donors stay anonymous, it is harder to judge messages and motives. Voters can’t easily tell who benefits, or who might be getting special access after the election.
Hidden funding can also raise corruption risk. If rules allow major spending to flow through nonprofits or shell companies, policy can tilt toward private interests that the public can’t see.
What's blocking progress
Federal action is stuck on Senate rules like the filibuster and incentives to keep donor identities hidden. Even when rules change, enforcement and new workarounds can weaken disclosure.
