Many schools can’t cook fresh, healthy meals because their kitchens and equipment are outdated. The School Food Modernization Act would help schools upgrade kitchens and train staff so they can serve more nutritious food. Winning looks like Congress moving the bill through committee and passing it in the House within 24 months.

Old cafeteria kitchens are holding back healthier lunches
Why this matters now
For about 30 million kids, school breakfast and lunch are a big part of what they eat each day. If cafeterias can only heat pre-packaged foods, students may miss out on fruits, vegetables, and other healthier options.
Modern kitchens also help schools serve students faster and with less waste. When lines are shorter and food tastes better, more kids eat. That matters most for low-income students who rely on school meals the most.
What's blocking progress
The biggest barrier is funding in a tight federal budget and a crowded congressional calendar. The bill may also get stuck waiting for a larger package like Child Nutrition Reauthorization, which is overdue.
